The vision of YOUTH is to create a music program that caters to the diverse learning styles and cultures of today’s children. YOUTH’s program will prepare 4th-8th grade students to participate in a variety of performance ensembles. YOUTH will offer private lessons, group classes, small ensembles and orchestra rehearsals, and performance opportunities. YOUTH will give high school audition prep in 8th grade and continue to engage their high school alumni as mentors. We will support each child in all areas of their musical development. YOUTH’s private lesson instructors will address the learning needs of each individual child and create the best course of practice for their musical progress. Through our private lessons, group classes and ensembles, we will find the right fit for your child’s musical needs. Check out the descriptions below to find the program that is right for your child.
Spark - 4th and 5th grade
Begin your child’s orchestral journey in group string classes! These beginner classes are designed to give students a foundation in violin, viola, cello and double bass technique and performance. 4th grade students will establish proper posture, quality tone, and note and rhythm reading skills. In 5th grade, students will establish the foundation of advanced level performance skills; tempo, dynamics, articulations, balance, phrasing, and intonation. Group classes create a safe and fun environment for students to develop the skills necessary to continue through our ensemble programs. Along with making music, students will create lifelong bonds with their classmates. We encourage students to begin private lessons along with these classes to support their progress on the instrument.
Ignite - 6th grade
6th grade students are given the opportunity to join our YOUTH Orchestra. By joining our orchestra, you are joining a community of musicians. Students will expand their performance experience and skill through diverse repertoire. Weekly rehearsals will improve students ability to listen to themselves and others within their section and ensemble, respond to the conductor’s gestures and feedback, reinforce skills learned in group classes and private lessons. The YOUTH Orchestra will prepare for three performances during the school year. Auditions will be held before the beginning of each performance cycle. All orchestra students are required to take private lessons.
Flame - 7th Grade
Along with continuing YOUTH Orchestra and private lessons, 7th grade students will create, trios, quartets or quintets with their peers under the supervision of one of our instructors. Without a conductor to lead these rehearsals, students will develop their sense of musical ownership and independence. In chamber ensemble rehearsals, students will be responsible for tempo, dynamics, articulations, balance, phrasing, and intonation along with performing the correct notes and rhythms. Not only will students develop their performance skills but they will develop leadership skills, organizational skills, stage presence and creativity. Chamber ensembles that are prepared will have the opportunity to perform at community events throughout the school year.
Fireworks - 8th grade
Students who join our 8th grade program will continue to perform in YOUTH Orchestra, chamber ensembles, and receive private lessons. In their final year of our program, all the skills that have been developed will continue to be reinforced through rehearsals, practice and performance. 8th grade students who join us for the first time in will develop their skills through this well-rounded musical experience. We celebrate our 8th grade students as they transition into high school. As a rite of passage, students will prepare and perform a major solo work of their choosing at out Firework Showcase!
Embers - High School Alumni
Students who complete a minimum of the full 8th grade program are eligible to apply to be a mentor. Mentors will assist with group classes, orchestra rehearsals and performances throughout the school year. In return, they will receive a scholarship for private lessons with one of our wonderful instructors.
